The Man Between (1953)
another one that is going for £65 and its on my DVD, o how I laugh!
Living in the shadow of "the Third Man",the movie has been underrated and overlooked. In many respects it is a very similair story, but set in Berlin and not Vienna, immediately after World War 2.It truly captures the sense of the division between East and West Berlin, and the physical and human carnage resulting from the last days of the battle for that city..
The atmosphere of those days is tantilisingly captured , by Carol Reed's use of the camera and the background music. However perhaps neither these two elements meet the impossibly high standard of The Third Man.
The storyline is gripping until the very end,but again the actual ending does not quite have the suspenseful gut wrenching climax of the other movie...but very close..
This movie is not yet available in DVD..a huge loss to Carol Reed/James Mason fans. The VHS copy is very thin, just watchable ,and does not do this great movie justice.
