The Times:
Some of the original artwork for the 1948 film THE RED SHOES, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's masterpiece, are to go on show at BFI Southbank.
The images, created by the surrealist painter Hein Heckroth, were the basis for the visually stunning portrayal of a dancer's struggle to achieve greatness against the demands of love and marriage.
The film will also be re-released in a restored version with its colours returned to their original Technicolour glory, and includes the 17-minute ballet sequence, in which THE RED SHOES ballet is danced in full by a company created especially for the film, and with Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann and Leonid Massine in the lead roles.
The exhibition opens next Thursday and the restored version of THE RED SHOES will be released on December 11.
Heckroth, who worked on Powell and Pressburger's previous film, THE BLACK NARCISSUS, trained at the Bauhaus before moving to England.
He and his collaborator, Ivor Beddoes, produced 2,000 paintings, drawings and storyboard sketches for THE RED SHOES.
He created 130 oil paintings for the ballet sequence, several of which are to be shown at the BFI.
The works were turned into an animated film, which can also be seen at the exhibition.
